Pregnancy Back Pain vs. Sciatica-They're Not the Same

pregnant mom holding bellyDr. Carroll believes sciatica is one of the most overused diagnoses when talking about back pain. It’s rarely correct, because true sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which produces pain that radiates down the leg all the way to the foot.

When pregnant women come in complaining of back pain, it’s usually in the lower back, down the buttock, and sometimes down the back of the thigh.

Dr. Carroll is a big fan of yoga balls, as they allow women to lie on their stomach and open up their lower back. He also suggests elastic bands that are available to help support the extra weight and kinesiotaping which he does in our office.

True sciatica may be helped by stretching the glutes. One exercise is to sit with one leg crossed over the other and hug the legs to the chest.

The bottom line is, the only lasting way to relieve the pain is by having our chiropractor give you an adjustment.

Why Am I in Pain?

As your baby grows, your stomach gets pushed forward, which draws the spine forward as well. This movement causes compression of the joints in the lower back, causing pain locally, which may also radiate down the buttock and back of the thigh.

Chiropractic adjustment ensures everything is properly aligned and functioning without restrictions. Making corrections to the pelvis and sacrum helps Mom be more comfortable.

Tips to Avoid and Ease Back Pain During Pregnancy

  • Bend your knees and keep your back straight when you lift or pick something up from the floor
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects
  • Move your feet when you turn to avoid twisting your spine
  • Wear flat shoes to evenly distribute your weight
  • Try to balance the weight between two bags when carrying shopping
  • Keep your back straight and well-supported when sitting – look for maternity support pillows
  • Get enough rest, particularly later in pregnancy
  • Have a massage or a warm bath
